How Automating Critical Business Functions Can Improve Business Operations

Steven Morris

Today’s most successful restaurant concepts have aggressively utilized leading edge technology tools to facilitate their growth, improve operations, achieve better results, and gain a leg up on the competition. Creativity and innovation in menu offerings, supply chain cooking systems and methods, or ingredient sourcing alone cannot position a restaurant concept for growth and scalability.

As we all are aware, technology has dramatically altered the way we interact with many of the brands and companies whose products we consume.  The rise of the internet, mobile devices and networks and cloud computing has revolutionized the way we function as consumers and the way businesses operate.

Restaurant chains large and small have adopted technology in many ways that consumers have demanded and embraced. Mobile apps to order, third party delivery services, and restaurant rating systems have all changed the way consumers search for and interact with restaurants. Two leading companies that have been a part of my career path, McDonald’s and Panera Bread have made huge investments in technology to transform their brands and systems. Smaller upstart brands have also made significant investments to position their companies as technologically savvy and in tune with consumer demands.

In many cases, however, the application of technology to support and enhance operating and management systems has lagged behind. I have found in my career that technology is a powerful tool that must be embraced to effectively manage restaurant businesses in today’s competitive environment.

One of the most powerful tools I have worked with is built upon a customizable cloud-based platform that is easily accessed from just about any mobile device.  It enables you to create a set of systems and operating structures that are based upon your needs and your vision of how your restaurant business should perform.

You can streamline, document and create accountability in every area of your business. Management systems, human resource systems, daily, weekly, and monthly operations systems, security and food safety systems, the list is almost endless.

Communicating in real time and creating a culture of accountability and responsibility across all levels of the organization is critical to success in today’s world. Quick reaction time to critical situations involving employees, customers, vendors or other key players is essential.

Documenting, and preserving important procedures and storing them securely in the cloud reduces the need for in restaurant filing systems and eliminates completely the risk that required forms and data will never be lost or compromised.

There are a growing number of options to accomplish these objectives through the use of new technologies. While there are similarities and common themes between restaurant concepts, it is critical that companies retain the ability to create customized tools that work for the people that use them. If teams don’t believe and act as if these automated tools make their jobs easier to perform, protect them, and help them succeed, they won’t commit to use them diligently.

Make the commitment to automating your business management and operating systems! Don’t let the initial investment in time and financial resources or the minimal costs of ongoing maintenance and support for these systems scare you away.
